The best shipping app for Shopify in Australia: how to choose the right one

Updated 31 October 202610 min readBy the EZOZ team at Synckony

There is no single best shipping app for Shopify in Australia. This guide shows you how to pick the right one for your Australia Post account, your volume and the way you work, with a checklist to use before you install anything.

A store posting ten parcels a week needs something very different from a warehouse labelling two hundred eParcel orders a day. So instead of a ranking, here's a way to judge any Shopify shipping app in Australia. New to shipping on Shopify? Start with our complete guide to Shopify shipping in Australia.

Start with your Australia Post account

The account you post on decides which apps can work for you at all, so settle that before you compare features. Australia Post has two quite different setups, and an app built for one may not support the other.

MyPost Business

MyPost Business is free, has no minimum volume, and gives discounts in savings bands based on how much you spend. It suits smaller senders. If this is your account, you need an app that says plainly it works with MyPost Business.

eParcel Contract

Australia Post says eParcel is for businesses sending more than 2,000 domestic parcels a year. It's a contract account with negotiated rates, reviewed periodically, and it needs approval (apply through Australia Post or your account manager).

Software connects to eParcel through Australia Post's Shipping and Tracking API, using an API key and password from the Australia Post Developer Centre plus your eParcel account number. An eParcel app should ask for exactly those three things. Our guide to shipping with Australia Post eParcel on Shopify explains the setup.

Other carriers, and whose account

If you also send with StarTrack, Sendle, CouriersPlease, Aramex or DHL, decide whether you want one app for all of them or a dedicated Australia Post app alongside another tool. Also ask whether an app uses your own carrier account (billed at your rates) or sells you postage on its account. That changes what you pay, who invoices you, and who you deal with when a parcel goes missing.

The five kinds of Shopify shipping apps

Most apps fall into one or more of five groups, and the group tells you what to check first.

Kind of appWho it suitsWhat to check
Multi-carrier label platformsStores using two or more carriers, or choosing a carrier per parcelWhich Australia Post account types it connects to; your postage account or theirs; whether checkout rates cost extra
MyPost Business appsSmaller senders without a contractThat it connects to your MyPost Business account; how labels are paid for; whether it quotes rates at checkout
eParcel contract appsStores with an approved eParcel contractThat it uses your own API key, password and account number; manifests; satchels; international; returns
Checkout-rate calculatorsStores happy with their label process that want accurate postage at checkoutYour Shopify plan; where the rates come from; markup; what customers see if the carrier is slow to answer
Returns-focused appsStores with a lot of returns, such as clothing and footwearWhich account return labels are made on; whether returns show up in Shopify; who pays return postage

An Australia Post Shopify app that claims to do everything deserves a closer look: put the questions below to its developer.

What to compare between shipping apps

Compare your shortlist on the jobs you actually do every day, and ignore features you'll never use.

Checkout rates

Live rates mean customers pay postage worked out for their parcel and postcode, rather than a flat guess. Shopify calls these "carrier or app calculated" rates, and they come with a plan requirement that catches many stores out. As of October 2026, Shopify's developer docs say an app's live rates at checkout need one of these:

  • the Advanced plan or higher (Advanced or Plus);
  • the Grow plan (formerly called the "Shopify" plan) with yearly billing;
  • the Grow plan with the feature added for a monthly fee (ask Shopify Support).

They're not available on Basic or Starter. Development stores not on Basic can use them. If your store changes plan and no longer qualifies, the app's checkout rates are switched off.

Live third-party rates at checkout depend on your Shopify plan (Shopify's developer documentation, October 2026).

Beyond the plan, check:

  • Where the rates come from: your own contract, the app's account, or a table you keep up to date.
  • Markup: whether you can add a percentage, a fixed amount, or both.
  • A fallback: what customers see if Australia Post is slow to answer. A missing shipping option can cost you the sale.
  • Product weights: a product with no weight is treated as weighing nothing, which under-quotes postage.

Our guide to showing live Australia Post rates at Shopify checkout covers the setup, including where calculated rates go in Markets and in the older shipping settings.

Labels and printing

This is where you'll spend most of your time, so test it on real orders. A shipping label app for Shopify in Australia should let you:

  • create a label from the order without retyping the address;
  • check and change the weight and box size before labelling;
  • label many orders at once;
  • choose Parcel Post or Express Post, with or without signature on delivery (without one, the parcel can be left under Authority to Leave);
  • print on what you have: A4 sheets (ask how many labels fit a page) or a thermal printer;
  • fulfil the order with its tracking number, so Shopify emails the customer the tracking link.

Count the clicks for a normal day. Two extra per order adds up fast at a hundred orders.

Manifests

On eParcel, a manifest lodges the day's labelled parcels (Australia Post's API calls it an "order"), and you print its summary for the driver or the counter. If an app makes labels but leaves the manifest to you, that's another system to open every afternoon.

Prepaid satchels

Prepaid satchels are bought ahead in set sizes, cost one price for anywhere in Australia, and take items up to 5 kg that fit. Each has its own tracking barcode. If you use them alongside eParcel, check whether the app can record the satchel's barcode against the order so the customer gets tracking. Our comparison of prepaid satchels vs eParcel helps you decide which orders go in which.

Returns

A return label can be created on your Australia Post account and given to the customer. Check whether the app makes return labels on your account, attaches them to the return in Shopify, and gets them to the customer. Returns handled outside Shopify are easy to lose track of.

International customs

Overseas, each item needs a customs description, an HS tariff code and a country of origin. Goods worth more than A$2,000 in one consignment need an export declaration to the Australian Border Force first, and its number (the EDN) goes on the consignment. Look for an app that stores customs details per product and has a place for the EDN.

Multiple parcels and merged orders

A single domestic parcel can weigh at most 22 kg, so a heavy order has to go as several parcels, each with its own label and tracking. The reverse matters too: two orders to the same address can often go as one parcel and save you postage. Ask whether the app handles both, or leaves them to you.

Two orders to one address, packed and labelled as one parcel.

Pricing model

Apps charge a flat monthly fee, a fee per label, tiers by volume, or a mix. Postage is separate. Work out the total for a typical month: as an example, at 400 parcels a month a fee of 10 cents a label adds $40, while a flat fee stays the same however many you send. Add any paid extras too.

Support

When labels stop printing at 3pm, support matters more than any feature. Ask who answers (the people who built the app, or a general help desk), how (email, chat or video call), how fast, and in which time zone.

Data and uninstalling

A shipping app sees your customers' names and addresses. Ask how long label files are kept, what's deleted when you uninstall, and whether tracking numbers are written back to the Shopify order or kept only inside the app.

Red flags before you install

  • No recent updates. Shopify and Australia Post both change their systems. Ask when the app was last updated.
  • Recent reviews saying it stopped working. Read the newest reviews first. Last month's complaints about failed labels tell you more than old five-star reviews.
  • Vague answers about account type. If "does this work with my eParcel contract?" or "with MyPost Business?" gets a fuzzy reply, treat it as no until proven.
  • No way to test it. No free trial and no way to try it on a development store means your first real test happens on customer orders.

Questions to ask before installing

Send these to the developer, or tick them off against the listing and help docs:

  1. Does it support MyPost Business, eParcel Contract, or only its own account?
  2. Is postage billed on my account at my rates, or through the app?
  3. Does it show live checkout rates, on which Shopify plans, with a markup?
  4. Can I label in bulk and print on A4 or a thermal printer?
  5. Does it create the daily manifest?
  6. How does it handle prepaid satchels?
  7. Can one order go in several parcels, and two orders to the same address go in one?
  8. Does it do international labels with HS codes, country of origin and the EDN?
  9. How are return labels created and sent to the customer?
  10. What will it cost per month at my volume, all in, and who answers support?

Where EZOZ fits, and where it doesn't

This site is ours, so read this section with that in mind. EZOZ AusPost eParcel & Satchel is built for Australian Shopify stores with their own eParcel contract that want contract rates at checkout, and labels, manifests, satchels and returns handled in Shopify. It's on the Shopify App Store, with a free plan.

It connects with your own API key, password and account number, and Australia Post keeps billing postage on your contract. Checkout rates come from your contract plus your markup (a percentage and/or a fixed amount), with a price table that keeps checkout quoting if Australia Post is slow. Labels print on A4 (four to a page) or a thermal printer, singly or in bulk, and each order is fulfilled with its tracking number. It also does the daily manifest, several parcels per order, merged orders, satchel tracking by barcode, international labels and return labels.

Labels, manifests, satchels and returns work on any Shopify plan; checkout rates need a qualifying plan. There's a free plan for up to 50 shipments a month; paid plans are US$4.95 and US$29 a month, billed by Shopify after a 30-day free trial (see pricing).

It's not the right app if you post on MyPost Business, need other carriers such as StarTrack or Sendle, want flat prepaid-satchel prices at checkout, or need packing slips, branded tracking pages or delivery date estimates.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free Australia Post app for Shopify?

An app can be free to install, but postage never is: you pay it to Australia Post on your own account, or to the app if you buy postage through it. Check what a free plan covers and what the paid tier costs once you outgrow it. MyPost Business itself is free, with no minimum volume.

Can I use my Australia Post contract rates in Shopify?

Yes, with an eParcel contract and an app that connects to it through Australia Post's Shipping and Tracking API using your API key, password and account number. The app can then quote your contract rates, plus any markup, at checkout. Showing them at checkout also needs a Shopify plan that allows app-calculated rates. EZOZ is built for exactly this setup.

Do I need Shopify Advanced for live shipping rates?

Not necessarily. As of October 2026, an app's live checkout rates work on Advanced and Plus, and on the Grow plan (formerly the "Shopify" plan) with yearly billing or with the feature added for a monthly fee through Shopify Support. They're not available on Basic or Starter. Shopify's own flat rates, free shipping and rates by weight or order price don't need this.

Can one app handle Australia Post and other carriers?

A multi-carrier app can, which suits stores that also send with StarTrack, Sendle, CouriersPlease, Aramex or DHL. Check how far it supports Australia Post: your own eParcel contract, manifests, satchels and returns, not just labels.

What's the best shipping app for a small Shopify store in Australia?

If you send a few parcels a week without an eParcel contract, look for an app that works with MyPost Business and keep it simple: labels from your Shopify orders and tracking emails to customers. Upgrading your Shopify plan just for live checkout rates may not pay off yet. Our guide to saving on shipping with Shopify in Australia has more ideas.
